High 5 Today Campaign – Make a Difference Monday

For a while, I thought the “mommy wars” were imaginary. That they were actually self-inflicted because we were all being too hard on ourselves. We were comparing ourselves to some nonexistent ideal of the perfect mother.

This thought came to me when I noticed that highly shared posts on social media are those about ending the “mommy wars.” Seriously, how many times did you see this Similac commercial in your newsfeed? I also often see posts about the struggles of motherhood and how we can all relate to each other. This led me to think that we really are all on the same team. We are all looking to put an end to the feelings of competition and inadequacy.

However, then I read blog posts like this, talking about the harsh and cruel comments they received, and reality comes crashing down on me. My bubble bursts. The “mommy wars” do exist.

But here’s what I’ve also realized. It’s not just moms that this happens to. It’s everyone. No matter what walk of life you are on, there is always somebody out there that is going to cut another person down for their choices. Unfortunately, these judgments from people will probably always exist. I guess it’s just part of human nature.

While I have no control over the actions of others, the good thing is that I can control my own.

I know that I am not a saint. I judge probably just as much as the next person. But I’ve learned that by being aware of this fact, I am able act with kindness and respect. I understand that my thoughts and opinions will differ from others, and I am vigilant about being more accepting of their choices.

I can also lead by example, through exhibiting kindness and working hard to not pass judgement so quickly. I want my behavior to be encouraging and empowering rather than negative and degrading.

Not only that, I can use my tiny influence to promote these type of actions and attitudes. And it is this thought that has led me to start my own little kindness campaign!

When I first had this idea, it was originally about encouraging and empowering moms, as that is a segment of the population that I identify with most. But as I wrote and thought more about it, the idea morphed to include everyone . I think everyone deserves to be built up. So why not open this up to all types of people, whether you’re female or male, a parent or not, whatever your age or marital status? It’s about everyone.

I’m calling this campaign “High 5 Today!” If you know me personally, you are more than likely aware that my favorite reward to give and way to celebrate is with a big high five.

High 5 Today Campaign - Join this kindness campaign to encourage and empower rather than tear each other down. - www.MePlus3Today.com

Here is how it works:

The High 5 Today campaign is all about encouraging other people instead of tearing them down. It is about acceptance versus judgement. Basically, it’s about being respectful and kind.

Each week, I plan to encourage and empower at least one other person that I notice is struggling. Someone who might be feeling down, having a bad day, or was the recipient of some unkind treatment. I might do this with a few nice words, an encouraging note, or some other gesture like actually giving a high five! It could be for a friend, a neighbor, or a complete stranger. Anyone that needs to be built up!

To make it really easy, I even made this simple printable to use. Each individual card can be cut out and kept in my purse so they are available to hand out at any time! If you’d like to print some cards, click here or on the image below. I suggest printing on cardstock paper to make them a little more durable. Note: Printables are for personal use only. Please do not sell or alter in any way. Thanks!

I’d love to have you join me on this kindness campaign! If I can get just one other person on board with this, then I’ve doubled my influence! Of course, I’d be thrilled to have as many people as possible participating though!

So, what do you think? Will you commit to the High 5 Today campaign? Are you willing to encourage and empower someone rather than tearing them down for their choices?

If you are ready to join, fill out the following form for weekly kindness reminders and access to the High 5 Today Facebook group that will consist of like-minded people who are also participating.

Kindness always wins! 🙂 You are right, we can’t control the words, actions, or behavior of others, nor should we own it. Sometimes I find myself doing that with my kids.
I often find myself coming back to Philippians 4:8… “whatever is true, lovely, and of a good report… think on these things.” It has been one of the key tools I have found keeps me positive and not dwelling in the hurtful, negative, or destructive that seems so prevalent in our living.

Great campaign and wonderful idea!
Blessings!

I love it, I have seen that similac commercial so many times. ha ha. But you are right, it isn’t just mommies. We are judged as a family becuase we have 5 kids. We are judged as a family because we are accepting a transfer so far away. I think mom’s are more aware of it and I think it comes across more because we are out with our kids. I mean, I’m sure there are at least ten times in an outing when someone could easily judge me. For snapping, for not noticing the little one wandering off, for …  Read more »
